This destination is beautiful and lush, with volcanic peaks, balconied palaces, azure lakes, and calderas. A truly unique landscape and culture, with jaw-dropping scenery at every turn.
Explore enchanting botanical gardens rich in exotic flora and fauna, cascading waterfalls and ancient lava tubes. Swim in natural thermal pool pockets and enjoy afternoon tea at Europe’s oldest Tea Plantation. Ribeira Natural Park
Immerse yourself in the enchanting landscape of Ribeira dos Caldeirões in Nordeste, a breathtaking protected area tucked away in the Northeastern part of São Miguel island. Here, streams majestically flow down from the mountain top, and you’re completely enveloped by verdant forest. Explore the natural beauty of cascading waterfalls and vibrant flora and take a moment to appreciate the historic charm of the pump house and waterwheel, adding a touch of authenticity to your experience. When you’re ready to take a break, unwind at the visitor’s centre, potter around the gift shop, and savour the essence of this enchanting spot with a good cuppa.
What your trip will look like…
Day 1
Fly from the UK to Ponta Delgada, São Miguel, where you’ll be transferred to your accommodation.
Day 2
Start the day with a guided visit of the fascinating Carvao Cave. Back on the coach to enjoy the hydrangea lined road journey to the Sete Cidades take in the views at the Miradouro da Vista do Rei Belvedere and have the option to walk around the crater rim down to the village or continue by coach where you can visit the San Nicolas Church with its charming garden and enjoy the local cafes. Take in the sights at the Ponta do Escalvado viewpoint, before exploring the Caneiros Natural tidal pools and black sand beach of Mosteiros. On your way back to the accommodation, you have the chance to see the inner workings of Arruda Pineapple Plantation.
Day 3
Walk along the waterfront to the harbour for a half-day whale & dolphin watching excursion, a real highlight! Spend the afternoon at the seafront lido soaking up the sun or exploring the town of Ponta Delgada with it’s beautiful town square and mosaic paved streets, a local History museum or the Jose Do Canto Botanical Gardens of Ponta Delgada, before heading back to your accommodation for an evening at leisure.
Day 4
Today’s visit includes the Ribeira dos Caldeirōes Natural Park for a leisurely walk to see the waterfalls, flora and fauna, the pump house and waterwheel. Time included for a stop at the visitors centre, gift shop and café. Enjoy afternoon tea at the Gorreana, Europe’s oldest Tea Plantation and a guided walk around the fields of the plantation before discovering the Caldeira Velha located in the national park where you can bathe in the warm waterfall and thermal pools and a chance to look around the visitor centre, before heading to Lagoa do Fogo viewpoint on the way back to the accommodation.
Day 5
Start your day with a visit to the Furnas hot springs, then continue by foot to Lagoa das Furnas for a stroll around the lake and to see the famous Cozido cooking area. For lunch today enjoy a traditional Cozido that has been cooked in the volcanic fumaroles. Following lunch enjoy an afternoon guided visit of the Terra Nostra Botanical Gardens with the opportunity to have a swim in the geothermal pool.
Day 6
It’s time to wave goodbye to this Eden as you are transferred to airport for a return flight home.
