The Azores, a stunning archipelago of nine islands, offer a wealth of natural beauty, and Ilha de São Miguel, known as “The Green Island” or “Ilha Verde,” stands out as the ideal destination for youth and adult groups seeking outdoor adventure. This lush island is dotted with volcanic peaks, azure lakes, and calderas, all set against a backdrop of jaw-dropping scenery.

Explore the twin crater lakes of Sete Cidades by kayak or stand-up paddleboard, or cycle around the lake’s breathtaking perimeter. For adrenaline-pumping activities, guided canyoning in Ribeira Natural Park is a must – jump, slide, and abseil through waterfall-dotted landscapes. Head east to Furnas Valley with its fumaroles (volcanic openings in the earth’s surface emitting steam and volcanic gasses) and unwind in one of the area’s geothermal pools. We have a great youth hostel in Ponta Delgada popular with our groups thanks to it’s communal areas – which are perfect spaces to relax at night. Also, it’s conveniently located in the city centre. Or for groups who want their time on this sub-tropical island to have an extra feel of luxury, then we can offer a fantastic hotel option which is also well suited to groups.

Ribeira Natural Park canyoning

Immerse yourself in the enchanting landscape of Ribeira dos Caldeirões in Nordeste, a breathtaking protected area tucked away in the Northeastern part of São Miguel island. Warm up your muscles walking along the trail, leading to the starting point of this thrilling escapade! And brace yourself to jump, slide and abseil amidst the natural wonders that surround you… Descend along the stream that majestically cascades down from the mountain top, completely enveloped by verdant forest. Once you’ve reached the peak and taken a deep breath to marvel at the wondrous panorama, the adrenaline-fueled descent commences! Prepare to be captivated as you familiarise yourself with the downstream terrain before abseiling down spectacular waterfalls. This is truly an other-worldly adventure!

Adventure at Sete Cidades

Choose between a half-day or full-day adventure in one of the most stunning locations on the island. Whether you opt for kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding on the crystal-clear waters of Lagoa das Sete Cidades, or combine multiple activities such as biking and hiking, you’ll be surrounded by lush greenery, towering volcanic cliffs, and a serene lake backdrop that makes every moment unforgettable.

The half-day option lets you focus on one or two activities, perfect for those looking to explore by bike, paddle, or hike at a more leisurely pace. For the full-day experience, you can mix and match activities to get the most out of this stunning natural landscape.

Not only will you enjoy the breathtaking scenery, but you’ll also improve your balance and core strength whist paddling or kayaking on the tranquil waters. It’s the ultimate active escape in nature!

Guided Hikes: Ribeira Funda - Maia

Embark on a full-day, guided hike across the stunning landscapes of São Miguel Island, starting with a comfortable coach ride to the village of Ribeira Funda. From there, you’ll begin a linear trail through a lush cryptomeria forest. Along the way, you’ll encounter numerous waterfalls and traditional watermills, making for a picturesque and serene experience. The hike continues to the breathtaking waterfall near Viola Beach, where you can take in the beauty of the cascading waters before reaching the volcanic sands of the beach.

As you follow the coastline, you’ll reach the parish of Maia, where you’ll enjoy a visit to the breathtaking Santa Iria viewpoint. The hike concludes in Maia, where the coach will pick you up for the return journey.

This guided hike is the perfect way to experience a beautiful part of São Miguel in one unforgettable day!

There are also plenty of other guided hikes across São Miguel, each offering stunning views of the island’s natural beauty.

How could your trip to the Azores look?

It’s important to remember that all our itineraries are tailor-made. There’s no fixed itinerary, every activity holiday is different. That said, we know it’s helpful to see how your time away could look, so here’s a sample itinerary to get the ideas flowing.

Day 1

Fly from the UK to Ponta Delgada, São Miguel, where you’ll be transferred to your accommodation.

Day 2

Begin with a guided tour of the Gruta do Carvão lava tube. Continue to Sete Cidades, stopping at Vista Rei Belvedere for stunning views before hiking the crater rim down to the village. Take in the breathtaking scenery at Ponta do Escalvado viewpoint, then unwind at the beautiful Mosteiros Beach. Return to your accommodation to relax for the evening.

Day 3

Walk to the harbour for a half-day whale & dolphin watching excursion, a real highlight! Spend the afternoon at the seafront lido soaking up the sun, before heading back to your accommodation.

Day 4

It’s another jam-packed day today as you explore the stunning Ribeira Grande Caldeiras, a geothermal wonderland in the Azores, known for its vibrant hot springs and fumaroles. Then discover Caldeira Velha, where you can bathe in a geothermal pool with a cascading waterfall, before heading to the Lagoa do Fogo viewpoint.

Day 5

Experience the stunning twin lakes of Sete Cidades with a bike ride, followed by an exhilarating stand-up paddleboarding session and a fun kayak session. Glide across the calm waters for a unique view of the lake. You can also stop by Arruda Pineapple Plantation and discover the fascinating process behind these world-renowned fruits.

Day 6

Start your day with a visit the Lagoa des Furnas, where you’ll trek around the lake and explore the Cozido cooking area, then take a scenic walk to the village of Furnas where you will see the Furnas Hot Springs. In the afternoon, relax with a swim in a geothermal pool at the Botanical Gardens, before enjoying a spot of tea at Gorreana Tea Plantation and strolling through its lush fields.

Day 7

It’s time to say goodbye to this paradise! After a trip filled with unforgettable activities, you’ll be transferred to the airport for your return flight home.
