Founded by Robert Baden Powell in August 1907 in Dorset, England, the Scouting community was built on five key pillars. The Scout values reflect the best personal qualities a person can have. They also aim to promote inclusivity and respect, and are intended to be lived out rather than simply learned about. These values help shape young members’ behaviour, relationships and decisions in everyday life, guiding them to be the best versions of themselves.
What are the 5 pillars of the Scout values?
Integrity: Each member must act with loyalty, honesty and trustworthiness towards others.
Respect: Scouts must show respect for others while also maintaining respect for themselves.
Care: Being a part of the Scouting community means taking responsibility for their surroundings and the wider world, as well as showing care towards others.
Belief: As Scouting is an inclusive community, it gives members space to explore personal beliefs, faiths and attitudes, while also learning about those of others.
Cooperation: Making a positive difference within their community and the wider world is a vital part of being a Scout.
Values that last a lifetime
These values tie in with the Scout Law, which emphasises kindness, self-respect, global fellowship, courage and loyalty, and the Scout Promise, which is a personal commitment to follow these key principles, in a way that is inclusive of all faiths and non. They help young members develop character and confidence while they navigate the ever-changing world and encourage young people to make positive choices, support others and make meaningful contributions to society as a whole.
How international travel reflects the Scout values
Travelling to new destinations across the globe is a fantastic way for Scouts to put their values into action. Learning about new cultures and belief systems requires respect, care and consideration for others as they explore different ways of life, traditions and cuisines.
Venture Abroad provides eye-opening trips around the world that broaden young people’s minds to new ideas and new experiences, whether it’s an action-packed alpine adventure in Kandersteg, an icy expedition to Iceland or a traditional Norwegian escapade. Each destination is designed for every member to grow, have fun and learn. Through exploration and engaging activities, Scouts can build independence and friendships while gaining a deeper understanding of their role in the world and global community in a meaningful and memorable way.
