One of the most important moments in a young person’s Scouting journey is making The Scout Promise. It’s a personal commitment to live by the values of Scouting, support others, and become part of a worldwide movement that has inspired millions of people for over a century.
Whether it is made in a village hall, around a campfire, at the top of a mountain, or beside a beautiful alpine lake, the Scout Promise is a moment that every Scout remembers.

What is the Scout Promise?
The Scout Promise is a simple but powerful declaration that reflects the values at the heart of Scouting. Every young person and adult makes a Promise when they join, committing to do their best, help other people and live by the Scout Law.
There are different versions of the Promise for each section of Scouting:
- Squirrels
- Beavers
- Cubs
- Scouts, Explorers, Scout Network and adult volunteers

A Promise for Everyone
One of the greatest strengths of modern Scouting is that it is open to everyone, regardless of faith, belief or background.
The Scouts have developed several versions of the Promise so that every member can make a Promise that has genuine meaning to them. There are versions for members who are Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh, Jewish, Humanist, atheist or of no faith background.
Although the wording differs, each Promise reflects the same shared Scout values of integrity, respect, care, belief and cooperation. It is a wonderful example of how Scouting celebrates diversity while bringing people together through common values.
Investing a Scout
The ceremony where a young person makes their Promise is known as Investing a Scout.
It marks the moment they officially become part of their Troop and join the worldwide Scout family. Friends, leaders and often family members gather to witness this important milestone, making it one of the most memorable occasions in a Scout’s journey.
An investiture ceremony can be simple or unique to the group, but wherever it takes place, it represents a new beginning filled with adventure, friendship and opportunity.

A Promise Made in Switzerland
The Venture Abroad marketing team were fortunate enough to witness an investiture ceremony while travelling with the Epping Eagles Explorers in Switzerland.
Against the stunning backdrop of Oeschinensee, several young people made their Scout Promise, officially becoming part of the worldwide Scout family. It was a simple but incredibly moving moment that reminded us that Scouting is all about belonging and friendship.
One moment stood out in particular. The youngest Scout, who had only recently celebrated their tenth birthday, took their next step in Scouting in one of the most breathtaking locations imaginable. It was a memory that everyone present – leaders, fellow Scouts and the new members themselves – will treasure for years to come.

A Moment That Stays With You
Every Scout remembers where they made their Promise.
The Scout Promise represents commitment, kindness, courage, and service to others. It is the beginning of countless adventures and lifelong friendships, reminding every Scout that they are part of something much bigger than themselves… a worldwide movement united by shared values and a desire to leave the world a little better than they found it.
