Royal Tunbridge Scouts ventured to Kandersteg, Switzerland for a week of unforgettable adventures, thrilling activities and to join in the Scouting spirit at the permanent mini jamboree at the Kandersteg International Scout Centre.
Here is what Brian, Royal Tunbridge Scouts group leader had to say about their incredible trip.
Was there a moment during the trip where you thought, “this is exactly why we did this”?
Yes, there were several moments like that. The top of the Bündnerspitz hike was one, 2528m high, with glorious views, but even more rewarding than the scenery was the constant encouragement within the group. When one person was struggling, the others rallied round, and that role swapped between us several times throughout the climb.
Two other moments deserve mention too. Renewing our Scout promise in the bright sunshine at the top of the Jungfraujoch was very special, as was the international parade on our last evening (31st July). We often talk about Scouting being an international family, and that parade brought it to life so vividly. I don’t mind admitting I found the ceremony in Kandersteg a little emotional.

What did the team at Venture Abroad do to make things easier, smoother, or less stressful than expected?
Katie and the team take away so much of the burden that would otherwise fall on me as leader.
Before each trip, their expert advice and local knowledge take the guesswork out of choosing activities, I know I’m picking from options that actually work on the ground, not just what looks good on paper. The trip administration is first class, be it constant changes to the passenger manifest, or ensuring the Vamos app has the correct paperwork in, it all just happens.
During the trip itself, nothing is too much trouble: last-minute logistics, whatever comes up, they handle it without fuss.
The fact that I’ve used Venture Abroad four times now (2016 Kandersteg, 2020 Kandersteg – cancelled due to Covid, 2023 Iceland, and now 2026 Kandersteg again) and am already thinking of the next trip in 2029 speaks for itself.
Put simply, I wouldn’t undertake the leadership of our international adventures without them.

Would you recommend the destination you visited to other scouts / groups?
Absolutely, and while school groups will benefit from the challenging activities and teamwork just as much, Kandersteg is somewhere I’d recommend to Scout groups in particular.
The fourth Scout Law states, “A Scout belongs to the worldwide family of Scouts,” and nowhere is that demonstrated more vividly than at the permanent mini-Jamboree site there. Scouts from across the world mix side by side, and language is never a barrier. It’s a genuinely special place, and one I’d say every Scout should visit if they get the chance.

Why do you choose to do plan international trips?
International trips like this matter hugely in Scouting. They bring to life the idea of a worldwide family of Scouts, something you can talk about in meetings but only really understand once you’re stood shoulder to shoulder with young people from other countries. They also open up international experience to far more of our members than the handful who get selected for World Scout Jamboree, giving a much wider group the chance to travel, camp abroad and grow through it. And there’s real value in the everyday moments, sharing a campsite with troops from other nations, picking up a few words of their language, comparing badges and traditions. Those small exchanges build bridges between cultures in a way that’s simple, genuine and lasting.
