We’re excited to announce that our lovely Tour Coordinator, Karen, is launching a brand-new Guide unit in Darley Abbey, Derby.

Until now, the absence of a local Guide unit has meant that many young members have had to travel to neighbouring areas to participate. Thanks to all Karen’s hard work, more girls will be given the chance to be part of something special right in their own community – no lengthy commutes needed!

Karen has been volunteering for her daughter’s Rainbows unit for years, and we just can’t wait to see this exciting development flourish! Read on for all the exciting details…

How it all started…

Karen’s journey with Girlguiding began in Germany, when she joined her local British Girlguiding Overseas Brownies Unit. She immersed herself in all the creativity, confidence and camaraderie and went on to join a local Guide unit. Regular visits to the UK even gave Karen the opportunity to join her Aunt’s Guide unit sessions – double the adventure!

Unfortunately, at the age of 14 and with no Rangers unit available in her local area, her Girlguiding experience was cut short.

Years later, as she’s supported her daughters in their Rainbows, Brownies and Guides experiences, Karen’s love for Girlguiding has been reignited. As a dedicated Rainbows volunteer for the past four years, she’s always dreamt of opening her own unit. And that dream has taken shape sooner than she anticipated…

How it all unfolded…

Karen has recently completed her Leader Development Programme – she’s now fully qualified to be a Girlguiding leader!

Initially, Karen set her sights on doing some extra volunteer work for a Guide unit within her District, but she soon discovered that all the available roles were filled. Just when she thought her plans might be on hold, the perfect opportunity arose – launching a BRAND-NEW Guide unit.

Over a cuppa and a slice of cake, Karen talked with an incredible and knowledgeable Volunteer Coordinator to discuss the practicalities. And just like that, the wheels were set into motion!

A community effort

Karen reached out to the community for a helping hand and the support she’s received has been incredible! People from across Derbyshire have donated all kinds of supplies – craft materials, games, and even personalised tote bags!

She was initially only asking for pens, pencils and paper, but has even received offers from people who would be delighted to provide free workshops for the Guides like leather woggle and bracelet making!

The world is waiting…

Now that she’s completed her LDP training, Karen’s ready to start working towards her Going Away License! Step by step, the opportunities available to the unit will become bigger and better. It all starts with a sleepover, then a camp out, and then the world is their oyster!

Mark your calendars and watch this space!

The unit, 2nd Darley Abbey Guides, officially opens on September 10th – just in time for the new academic year!

To register interest, just head to the official Girlguiding registration page – there are some spaces remaining!

Congratulations Karen 😊
