The Solar Explorers visit Amsterdam

The solar explorers had a week full of fun at Buitenzorg! Activities like heading to the zoo, Ice creams at the pool, a trip to Amsterdam and even more filled their week!

The week started off bright with some fantastic weather, after settling in and enjoying the sun on Saturday, they spent Sunday Clog painting and a guided tour of the Scout Museum with Sjoerd! Sjoerd is a member of the Kampstaf that has been in scouting his entire life, so is full of stories and had some really interesting insights into the history of scouting!

A very wet start on Monday morning but it didn’t dampen the spirits. The group headed to DierenPark Amersfoort on a mission to find all of the hidden rope bridges and slides hidden above and amongst the enclosures! The highlights for the Explorers definitely seemed to be the red pandas, penguins and sloths!

Tuesday was their ‘Silly Solar Fun Day,’ a chilled day at the camp with leader run activities and a walk into Baarn to visit a few of the shops (the toy shop went down quite well!!)

Mini golf and Swimming were next on the agenda, and King Cones – a huge Cornetto with a chocolate centre that I’m pretty sure every Explorer bought at the swimming pool! Bosbad de Vuurche is Baarns outdoor swimming pool, with mini golf attached! Another hot day meant that the Explorers were ready for a dip, or a dive off of the diving boards!

A favourite day for many – the trip to Amsterdam! The day started off with a canal cruise going past some classic tourist spots like the Dancing Houses! The explorers then had a chance to buy themselves a traditional Dutch lunch, with a mixture of pancakes and chip cones they all seem pleased! An afternoon of sight seeing and tourist shops finished off with an ice cream as there was a birthday amongst us!

Friday was a gorgeous cycle ride to Naarden, a historical star shaped town with a fort in it! With another important stop for ice cream the group they cycled back past some beautiful field full of heather!

This week has been a Solar’s first international trip, and it was a good one! I was so glad to be able to help them and join them for such an amazing week. Ready for the naps on the coach ride home they headed off on Saturday afternoon, ready for their beds!
